“Diamond Head is a volcanic tuff cone on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu and known to Hawaiians as Lēʻahi. The Hawaiian name is most likely derived from lae (browridge, promontory) plus ʻahi (tuna) because the shape of the ridgeline resembles the shape of a tuna's dorsal fin.[3] Its English name was given by British sailors in the 19th century, who mistook calcite crystals on the adjacent beach for diamonds.” Wikipedia

Popular with surfers, Alii Beach is located in Haleiwa off Highway 83. During winter, waves can reach heights over 25 feet. Care should be taking at this beach. The wave break can be dangerous during low tide and strong rip currents can occur around the deeper parts of the breakwater. Local surf sites include Off-the-Walls and Rock Piles.
